Black Crowned Night Heron

Black crowned nigh heron is also called night heron is found throughout the world leaving extremely cold areas and Australia. In upper part of the body i.e. head and back side of the body is black and rest is either grey or white. Legs are very small. This Making prey of snakes difficult

Indian Roller (Coracias benghalensis) Birds of India

Scientific name: Coracias benghalensis

Alternate Names:  नीलकंठ पक्षी , Indian blue jay

Regional Names: Telugu: Pala Pitta Kannada: neelakanthi

Size: 26-27 cm long

Migratory Status: Resident some seasonal movements.

Visibility: Common

Facts: State bird of Andhra Pradesh later of divided Telangana , Karnataka and Odisha, Bihar.

Conservation Status: Least Concern with Increasing Population

Diet: Insects, small reptiles (snakes) , Amphibians.

Habitat: Open grassland, scrub forest

White Throated Kingfisher

White-throated Kingfisher is also know as White Breasted Kingfisher or Smyrna kingfisher is widely distributed species of tree kingfisher.

 

Common name: White-Throated Kingfisher

Scientific name: Halcyon smyrnesis

Alternate Names: White Breasted Kingfisher or Smyrna

Regional Names:

Size: 28 cm

Migratory Status: Resident with some families making a small movement.

Visibility: Widely found across India.

Facts: State bird of West Bengal

Conservation Status: Least Concern with increasing population

Wildlife schedule: Schedule 4

Diet: Largely rely on crustaceans, insects,rodents, snakes, frogs, fishes, earthworms etc. Occasionally feeds on small birds   such as Oriental white eye and Red Wattled Lapwing.

Young ones mainly rely on an invertebrate.

Habitat: White-Throated Kingfisher is common species founds in a variety of habitats ranging from plain lands to Himalayan mountains up to height of 7500 feets.

Mostly seen on electric  and telephone wires, riverbank, woodland, and shrubland.

Nesting Period: Breeding season is onset of monsoon

The incubation period is 20-22 days chicks come out in 19 days.

Sexes: Alike

Predators: Very few predators when healthy due to powerful wings but in the exceptional case when old Black Kite and Jungle crow can prey on the bird.
